The Szczecin branch of the State Archives is located in a complex of historic tenement houses at Świętego Wojciecha Street 13. It is literally a few steps from Plac Lotników on one side and the Kaskada shopping center on the other side. When it comes to getting there, it is worth remembering that Jagiellońska Street in the section next to the Archives is one-way, but there are additional parking spaces and a bicycle path on it. Access for non-motorized people will be much easier. By bike, on foot or by public transport (the closest from the Plac Żołnierza stop).
The beginnings of the Szczecin archive date back to 1831, at that time it was located in the Pomeranian Dukes' Castle. In 1900 the collection was moved to its present location, a sizable building on Święty Wojciecha Street, the construction of which was financed by the Prussian authorities. The new seat allowed for the development and enlargement of the archive collection. During World War II, most of the collections were taken to Pomerania. The archive returned to work on August 1, 1945, under the Polish flag. Attempts were made to collect scattered collections and to complete new ones.
In the archive you can find a wide range of documents and materials about the city and the region, both historic and contemporary. One of the most interesting is the document from 1293 confirming the location of Szczecin under the Magdeburg Law. Some of the materials are available in digital form. The catalog of the collections is available on the website.
There is also a library with large collections concerning, in particular, Western Pomerania, magazines, and literature devoted to archival work. The archive conducts educational activities, lessons for children are organized here, the topics are books, the history of the city and Western Pomerania, genealogy and many more. Currently, there are two branches operating at the archive in Szczecin, in Stargard and Międzyzdroje.
